The Singapore River Raft Race, organised by the
Singapore Polytechnic for the 14th year, is one fun event where
anything goes. Anything that can be recycled - plastic bottles,
cans, bamboo, coconuts, tyres, brooms, rickety furniture - can be
used to build rafts. Participants who are mostly youths from tertiary
institutions, uniform groups, schools and international school paddle
their quirky rafts along the 100 metre course on the Singapore River
at Clarke Quay. It's all about creativity, adventure and sport.
Watch around 100 rafts battle it out, for at stake are two main
titles - The Fastest Raft and The Most Innovative Raft.

A
mythical animal with the head of a LION and the body of a
MERMAID. At 37m. tall, MERLION
stands guard over Singapore's good fortune.
Its fish-like body riding the waves of the sea, is symbolic of the
ancient city of Temasek ("sea town", the old name of Singapore).
At the same time, its majestic head recalls the legend of the discovery
of Singapore by Prince Nila Utama in the 11th century, when Singapore
received its present name. |
